An Apprentice’s Story

An Apprentice’s Story is a podcast series commissioned by the Goethe Institut’s Transatlantic Outreach Program that looks at an alternative path for young people to acquire the skills and experience they need to build a career- without college debt.

The series features interviews with three young American high school graduates who reveal how they became apprentices, who supported them, how their parents reacted, and the opportunities that opened up for them.

Episode 1: Andrew Splett- The MacGyver

Andrew was a bright kid who loved fixing things and working with his hands, but he didn’t fit the academic mold at his high school outside of Chicago. He couldn’t see a career path for somebody like himself, until one day, he chanced upon an apprenticeship program with a German-American company that appreciated his skills and saw his potential.

Episode 2: Isa Brady- The Maverick

Isa was a good student at her high school near Minneapolis, but she also loved working with power tools. Isa chose the trades over a pricey college degree and lucked into an apprenticeship at a Swiss-American company which opened up a surprising world of opportunities. The story examines the role her middle school teacher played and how a local youth apprenticeship program, now thriving in Isa’s hometown may be in jeopardy.

Episode 3: Danery Manzanares- The Explorer

Danery was an outgoing, ambitious kid in Charlotte, North Carolina with loads of different interests. He dreamed of a great career but had no money to get there. Joining a new robotics team led him into an apprenticeship at a German-American company that put him on the path to fulfilling his dreams.
