So many people in low-income countries where there are too few opportunities- where the economy isn’t working, choose to leave their friends and families behind to find work in another country. It’s a leap of faith in most cases… but the risk they take often pays off, and the money they send home accounts for a surprisingly large chunk of the country’s GDP. In fact, Global remittances reached a record $647 billion in 2022—three times that of government aid. Dilip Ratha is lead economist for migration and remittances at the World Bank. In this podcast, journalist Rhoda Metcalfe asks Ratha about his own experiences growing up in rural India and how they led him to become a leading voice on the power of remittances to reduce global poverty.
